A Legacy of Music, Friendship, and Giving Back

Celebrating 46 Years of the Singing Slovenes and Their KSKJ Life Roots

For 46 years, the Singing Slovenes have shared more than music. They have shared their love of Slovenian heritage, brought communities together, and created memories that will be cherished for generations.

But what makes their story especially meaningful to the KSKJ Life family is where it all began.

From the KSKJ Slovenian Singers to the Singing Slovenes

What started as a neighborhood gathering of Slovenian immigrants who simply wanted to sing songs from the “Old Country” grew into a musical tradition that would span nearly five decades.

Originally known as The KSKJ Slovenian Singers, the group was made up entirely of KSKJ members. During those early years, they recorded two cassette tapes, The KSKJ Slovenian Singers and Can This Be Heaven?

Founded in 1980 in the Gary-New Duluth area of Minnesota, under the direction of Frank Bucar and assistant director Mary Spehar White, the group eventually expanded beyond its original neighborhood roots.

As their performances reached new audiences and the group welcomed members from different backgrounds, they adopted the name The Singing Slovenes. Although their membership became more diverse, KSKJ Life members continued to make up the majority of the group throughout its 46-year history.

More Than Music: A Commitment to KSKJ Life

While their musical accomplishments are worth celebrating, the Singing Slovenes’ dedication to KSKJ Life and Lodge #171 is equally meaningful.

Throughout the years, members of the group have served as lodge officers, volunteered their time, and supported activities that bring their lodge and community together.

From hosting Matching Funds events to participating in Cultural Grant activities and sharing their musical talents at lodge gatherings, they have demonstrated the true spirit of fraternalism.

Their commitment is a wonderful reminder that KSKJ Life is about more than membership. It’s about the friendships we build, the traditions we preserve, and the ways we come together to make a difference.

46 Years of Sharing Slovenian Heritage

Over the decades, the Singing Slovenes performed at festivals, churches, senior centers, nursing homes, and educational facilities, sharing Slovenian music and traditions with audiences of all ages. Their talents earned national recognition, including the Cultural and Heritage Award at the 2011 Cleveland Polka Hall of Fame Awards Show.

They also performed at World Fest at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri, and made numerous appearances at Baraga Days in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Through every performance, they helped keep Slovenian traditions alive while creating lasting friendships and memories along the way.

A Farewell Worth Celebrating

On Sunday, October 11, 2026, the Singing Slovenes gathered with friends, family, and supporters at Buffalo Junction in Duluth, Minnesota, for their special “Last Farewell” celebration.

The event was an opportunity to thank the many people who had supported the group throughout its 46-year journey. Among those in attendance were three mayors, including Karl Oberstar, the current mayor of Gilbert, Minnesota, and a fellow KSKJ Life member; Dan Urshan, former mayor of Hermantown, Minnesota; and the current mayor of Duluth.

In a fitting tribute to their incredible legacy, the mayor of Duluth issued a proclamation officially declaring October 11, 2026, “Singing Slovenes Day” in Duluth, Minnesota. What an extraordinary honor for a group that began simply as neighbors gathering to share their love of Slovenian music!

For Frank Bucar, the celebration brought a mixture of emotions. It was a joyful opportunity to thank the group’s many supporters, but also a bittersweet farewell to the audiences and friends they had come to know over the years.

As Frank so fittingly shared: “One Last Toast — Živio!”
