Since 1894, GENERATION AFTER GENERATION have trusted KSKJ Life. Originally formed as a fraternal benefit society to provide for widows and orphans of Slovenian immigrants, we celebrate more than 100 years of service.
But the story of KSKJ Life is more than the story of our financial strength, our excellent investment products, or the value-added benefits of membership.
The true story of KSKJ Life is the story of our spirit. The story is one of passion, pride and the faith of our membership and our celebration of life and our heritage expressed in our cultural traditions.
This is our story. It is also our vision. When our forefathers created our fraternal benefit society in 1894, they had no way of anticipating the strength and the spirit of what would become generations later.
This rich inheritance of strength and spirit has become the cornerstone for our continued growth and vision. We celebrate our history. We create our future.
KSKJ (Kranjsko Slovenska Katoliska Jednota) was founded in April of 1894 when a group of Slovenian immigrants agreed that they could help more people by being united than they could by being separate. During the late 1800s, the Slovenians began immigrating to the United States in increasing numbers. Instead of finding better economic conditions than they experienced in the "old country," many faced hardship and unemployment.
There were no unions, social security or welfare agencies to care for the needy. When sickness beset an immigrant, he and often his entire family became the burden of friends. Public collections to pay for burials and to assist widows and orphans were commonplace.
As immigrant numbers continued to increase, the early Slovenians realized that protection was necessary for the less fortunate, to keep them from becoming public charges. Slovenians banded together in various states to form fraternal lodges to help each other in time of need. But there were some early leaders who saw a need for a larger and more integrated society.
That spirit of kinship and fraternalism burns as bright today as ever, as does the financial strength of our organization. We began official operations on April 2, 1894 with 333 members and no treasury. Today, more than 100 years later, we are a non-profit fraternal organization that has more than $100 million in assets and over 25,000 members in lodges coast-to-coast. Our mission remains the same -- to provide our members and their families with financial security and fraternal benefits that promote traditional Christian heritage and family values.

Insurance and annuity products are a fundamental strength of KSKJ Life. However, the fraternal aspect of KSKJ Life is equally important because it provides the living structure for us to continue to express the passionate mission of our founding fathers - a vibrant community, strong in faith, rooted in family, connected by love.
Because we are a not-for-profit fraternal benefit society, each member is also a society owner. By law, we operate under a lodge system. Officers of each lodge are elected democratically, as are the KSKJ Life Board of Directors.
Over the years, KSKJ Life lodges and members have maintained a devout and close relationship with the Catholic Church in the expression of our faith and cultural heritage. However, our bylaws provide that any baptized Christian, or a person married to a Christian member, is eligible for membership.
Our members enjoy gathering at numerous social, athletic and religious activities through their lodge communities - dances, picnics, basketball and bowling tournaments - and are also very active volunteers in projects, activities and causes that benefit their local communities, schools and churches.
Whether hosting a spaghetti dinner or pancake breakfast to raise funds for school needs, remodeling a parish building to better house community and cultural celebrations, or coordinating donations by multiple community organizations on behalf of needy children, our members give of themselves in the same passionate spirit of their forefathers. That spirit expresses faith in action.
Build Your Future
Babies, children and families are the heart and soul of who we are as a fraternal organization. The family is everything, which is why KSKJ Life continues to grow as a community of families. As such, we know that we are only as strong as our children, and we invest time, resources and passion into our youth.
It is important for us that our children learn about faith, fraternalism and community strength by experience. Therefore, Christmas and Easter are always special times for KSKJ Life youth.
A popular lodge activity is the annual Christmas party - complete with games, lots of prizes, refreshments, and a special visit by Santa! Our adult members are generous with their warmth and love as they enjoy planning, preparing and making this special day an annual treat for our youngest members.
Easter is also a special time of celebration. Many lodges sponsor activities around the spiritual celebration of our faith, but lodges also enjoy hosting Easter Egg Hunts and Youth Bowling Tournaments. Young members build relationships that last a lifetime from their participation in these popular events.
KSKJ Life was founded by people of faith who realized the need, as well as the power, of community. They envisioned helping each other by uniting into a strong brotherhood of faith, fraternalism and financial strength. That spirit of kinship and fraternalism burns as bright today as ever.

KSKJ Life Cultural Heritage
We are extremely proud of our rich cultural heritage and celebrate it through music, dance, art and culinary arts. We enjoy our rich musical heritage and support special events that host Slovenian performing arts. Likewise, our national costume is worn proudly on many occasions, especially during events which celebrate our passion for the polka!
Sports and Athletic Activities
Members enjoy team camaraderie and friendly competition among lodges and regions as they gather for the annual national basketball and bowling tournaments. Lodges send teams of boys, girls, men and women to compete and vie for national trophies and prizes. The tournaments are held in a different host city each year. Adult bowling teams are popular in many lodges, with two regional tournaments - Midwest and Eastern - and a national bowling tournament. Many lodges also host a youth bowling day.
KSKJ Life Matching Fund Grants
KSKJ Life provides special funding grants to encourage lodges to organize and carry out special fund-raising activities for their local community. All proceeds from these special fund raisers go to the community organization chosen by members of the sponsoring lodge.
Communications
We stay connected through our official publication, KSKJ Voice, (Glasilo). Written in English with a separate section appearing in each issue in Slovenian, our native language. The Voice announces news about friends, families, and publicizes lodge events in the community.

Scholarships
KSKJ Life offers high school and college scholarships to active members as well as student financial aid. Qualifications are based on scholastic achievement, community activity and demonstrated need.
