Slovenia is a land of diversity, beauty and tradition. For those who are unfamiliar with Slovenia or for those who are a bit rusty on their heritage, here are some facts that can give you a real feel for this unique country.

  • The Republic of Slovenia lies at the heart of Europe and borders Italy, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, and Italy
  • Slovenia has a population of 2 million
  • The capital city is Ljubljana (pronounced Loo-bla-na)
  • The official language is Slovene
  • Slovenia is 7,817 square miles (about half the size of Switzerland), but boasts beautiful mountains, forests, caves, waterfalls and the sea
  • Slovenia has 29 miles of sea coast, about an inch per inhabitant
  • The highest mountain is called Triglav (“three heads”) and is 9,396 feet high. The mountain is a national symbol that is featured on their flag.
  • The ancestors of current day Slovenia began arriving in the region around 600 A.D.
  • Slovenia declared its independence in 1991, and has been recognized by the United Nations. It has since been accepted for membership in NATO and EURO
